You never forget your first time- or, "You have no sense of humor, ok?"

My sister and I have a long-time obsession with a little-known gem of a movie called Surf Ninja's, starring a young Rob Schneider in a breakout role. If you haven't seen it, I highly highly recommend it. Or if you'd prefer, I'd be happy to recite the entire movie for you from start to finish, complete with the appropriate intonations and voices. There is a line in the movie in which the hero, a very deep and serious ninja from the small pacific island of Pa-too-san, says "you have no sense of duty or honor," to which his nephew responds "You have no sense of humor, ok?"

Despite my appreciation for this comedic masterpiece, I definitely have a tendency to favor the duty and honor side of life, and often forget about the importance of a good sense of humor. I'm going to do my best to keep this blog positive and light-hearted (though I can't promise that I won't use it to vent on occasion, because that prospect is pretty tempting).

On the topic of the blog- I find it bizarre that I am suddenly compelled to start one. Not once in my life have I ever kept a journal, diary, or any sort of written log of my thoughts/emotions/actions. However, I have recently, in summer internship boredom, become completely addicted to browsing various blogs- I favor those related to design, or the rants and ravings of people I (sometimes loosely) know. While I don't care at all whether anyone reads my blog, it seems like it would be satisfying to have a place to put your thoughts. This summer has definitely not been the easiest time of my life- waiting to start school and move on with my life, trying to sort through some very, very complicated emotions and figure out what I want (here I go with the blog venting already- insert bad movie joke). So while this blog has no direct purpose, it will sort of follow the direction of my life. As in, don't be surprised if by next month I am writing about nothing except drawing/studio/architecture. I should be so lucky :)

My favorite author, Ernest Hemingway, said "In order to write about life, first you must live it." If Hemingway had kept a blog, I think he probably would have amended this quote, because the writing and the living happen pretty much simultaneously- a concept that I find appealing, though Hemingway may have disapproved- So thanks for reading my first attempt at a blog post! I promise the next one will be less broad and hopefully more entertaining....
